Reflections on Changing Directions and Setting Goals!
I’ve really been thinking about the courage it takes to pursue something new or start a new project and how to move forward from there. You know the necessary steps it takes and the hard work involved that mainly seem to stump me up from the beginning. I’ve also realized that there’s a certain courage it often takes in the doing but firstly I believe it must come in deciding to do so and following through. Without that it’s as the quote says:
A Goal without a Plan is Just a Wish
So I admire others who were able to follow their plans while I still struggle in sorting mine out. Occasionally comparing my first ch
apter to their middle or end which is in how they’ve been able to pursue their passions or take those next few steps. While not giving credit to how far I’ve come and the progress I’ve made.
With that said, here is what I learned about creating and pursuing our goals:
- Sometimes the only way to figure out what works for us; what we can do and even what our goal might be is to try. It took me many attempts at writing before I figured out that blogging is for me, and I’m still learning from it and figuring out what specifically works. There’s a lot to be learned through trial and error. Even the simplest experiences are great guides in showing us what works for us, what doesn’t and what is most important. BUT it is only through these experiences that we gain valuable insights.
- Each new step to that point seems to be built upon the last. The more you put in and work towards that goal, the clearer it will become. You may also find what isn’t working for you anymore, but even those steps will bring you closer to what does.
- With each step there is room for further inquiries and also setbacks. Both allow us to reflect on our choices and adjust the direction of the sails. One important point is being gentle with ourselves if we come into tough times or make mistakes. It’s just a lesson that perhaps it’s time to reevaluate and reflect on where we went wrong and how to move in a better direction. Reflection is good, dwelling not so good.
It can be tricky feeling ready to take on change especially if we are uncertain how. Hopefully thinking of each decision simply a step or way to try something helps us be more open to it. It’s just a step for us to see where it may lead and it’s a way for us to move past the hypothetical “ifs” or “what ifs” we often get stuck on in between deciding whether it’s something we want to do or not. I’ve embraced many new experiences this past year and learned great new skills simply by deciding to go for them and seeing how it goes, figuring things out along the way. When you decide to try and see what happens the possibilities are endless. Who knows you might end up surprising yourself.

What I’ve learned from Creativity and Deciding!
If there is one thing I’ve learned about myself in the last year or so it’s that almost anything becomes possible once I set my mind to it and decide to go for it. I’ve taken on so many new experiences not only this year but in the last couple of years that have gotten me to where I am now. All have involved deciding to take on at the time something new. If I had not done so then who knows where or who I’d be, perhaps still me but a little more different, a little less brave/open. It’s not always so easy though, and realizing that much of the time what held me back is in agonzining over decisions, going back and forth between truly wanting to try and bowing out in hopes of gaining more information or clarity. I’ve driven myself crazy in this process- the hemming and hawing involved in making next steps; second guessing/going one way or the other then back again is exhausting; dwelling on the uncertainty looming in the air at times has seemed like an effort in futility.
What has proven valuable- despite uncertainty- is indubitable power in deciding to do something even if you’re unsure. If guessing at what’s unclear is no help then the one that does and can control is our own decisions, which can either mean being brave in the chance of uncertainty or sticking to what we know and is familiar. Which although is safe, doesn’t really allow you or I to grow. If I had stuck to the familiar and in giving an example say in creativity then I would have never learned how enjoyable baking, or knitting or even doing pastels would have been. By deciding, however, to at least try these experiences I’ve learned and grown so much all of which I wouldn’t have if I stayed in my room.
There’s also a quote I’ve seen and have around my desk that reads:
“If it excites you and scares you at the same time, it might be a good thing to try”.
I find it a great inspiration to help in continuing to be brave and open to new experiences and decisions- both those with great certainty and uncertainty. I think of it every time I’m attempting to write something new; explore a new insight; try something new and especially in sharing my experiences or thoughts with someone else. All of which can seem exciting or scary to me at any given moment depending on how I chose to look at it but by taking I’ve been able to stop worrying and figure out how to move forward. *In full admittance* this is a work in progress for me that has been both inspiring and un-nerving at times but knowing there is only one way to go from where I stand and that’s forward with patience and courage has helped- also the quote mentioned above works well too.

An Introduction and Thoughts on the Subject:
I begin looking at this topic a while ago with the modest mindset of how others it seemed were more able to show an openness towards sharing themselves and their experiences which got me thinking that it seemed like a pretty courageous thing to do. I’ve always been in awe of that for others while striving to do the same myself. There is something about letting your true self be shown that is rather intimidating for me and so I’ve often admired it in others while simultaneously trying to work on it myself. With that I’ve began the process really looking at the when and where of sharing while building my own quiet courage which has taken some mustering.
My progress so far: a) Is that it takes time to get there but in order to get there we must keep moving forward and b) by doing so it becomes a process of starting somewhere (usually with sharing small thoughts/experiences/interests and moving into bigger topics BUT as mentioned above you must keep moving forward. As hard and perhaps uncertain at times as it may be the alternative to that is getting stuck in a particular spot and not contribute to your own growth or growing the connection. I’ve learned through mine and other experiences that it can take some time too, but if we’re really lucky the person we are connecting with will be patient at the times where our courage is less or what we share is in small doses. It’s important to realize this for ourselves but also in terms of how others may work through opening up and sharing, the uniqueness of it for each person is what makes sharing experiences unique and perhaps to add on another important lesson we can learn from others- especially if they are more open it can encourage us to be more open too. So to conclude is we must keep moving forward, at your own pace of course, but forward. It seems to be the only way to make connections grow and to form trust.
Really what it mostly comes down to for me and might help you is a steadfastness in showing up, and being who I truly am. I’ve also taken the perspective that just by doing that I’m already half way there. Next as follows is the little pep talks I give myself to just say one thing/share one thing about yourself and see how it goes. The voice inside me would say, and you’ll feel prouder for doing it.

Insights on easing into flow (of life)- unsettling feelings and all
I’ve noticed something recently, which is sometimes that even the goodness of having most things settled in life- for example: happy in our careers or pursing passions we love and having friends that truly care for us- can be quite a shock if you aren’t used to those good vibes. We may wish for such things and provide great contentment but if you are used to looking for or having conflict this transiton too can seem even the slightest bit unsettling. When there’s nothing iminent for our minds to obsess about it may seem too good to be true. I suppose that’s where the saying came from… when good happened to appear in one’s life it seemed unbelievable and so too good to be true.
Here’s an interesting thought… what if we actually begin to believe in the good and it’s not too good to be true? Can you imagine how that could change your whole outlook? I couldn’t until it occured to me that these moments may also be fleeting- meaning not lasting forever- so with that I tried my best to appreciate it now. And by believing this in a positive manner you’ll quickly realize as I did that what you have is already more than enough. It also may not always mean that you love every aspect of what’s going on to me this seems unrealistic, there are always going to be days when this practice is harder than other, when there may be moments that aren’t as wonderful as you’d like them to be.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I can’t change. The courage to change the things I can. And the wisdom to know the difference!
How this practice works (in my experience): Instead of dwelling on those things that aren’t so perfect or good you focus on what is good- say if things seem difficult, focus on what isn’t; or going through a challenging time perhaps focus on the support you have or tools that may help versus. what definitely won’t help (complaining about the problem). By putting energy towards what you do have you are not only inviting more good in but not letting the negative ruin your day. It took a bit of mind training for me to figure out how to cut the habit of complaining out of my life, and how to focus on the good or other activities that I enjoy more (than work and complaining) but each opportunity to put this in practice it’s gotten easier as time went on.
Final tip: Try journalling to release those negative thoughts in a safe place before they have a chance to take over your thinking.
There is nothing like going away or getting time off work to relax and unwind from how hectic life can be. Even if we’re not working, taking a break from our day-to-day routines can be a good thing. It can allow us a fresh mindset and perhaps new perspective on our goals and progress on them. A taking stock, if you will of all we’ve done so far and how we plan to tackle the next chunk of time. It is also a good chance to turn off our brains and stop obsessing about work or chores and enjoy life. When it’s time to return back to routines there will be a chance to revisit those thoughts but they do us no good on much deserved vacations.
I’ve found it can also take some adjusting to being back at work. So how can one prepare for? To start I suppose is accepting that things may have changed while you were away, in which it will take some adjusting to the new flow of work upon arrival or if you are lucky enough that not much has happened it may be adjusting to more work piling up. Either way it may take some time, patience and willingness to find routine again. If you are lucky perhaps a day is enough to readjust, for myself I’ve found sometimes it takes a little longer more like a week to accept work life again. Continue reading
And What It Means…
To me, It has always meant that there are certain things I wanted to accomplish in my lifetime, experiences to have and goals to set that at times may be out of my reach or are very, very important to me. These are the things, that drive me (and probably you) forward into new endeavours, help me grow and are good ways to spread my wings and limits.
The experience seems that during those times, it’s a relentless search to attain goals just out of reach and often for me leads to some sort of unfulfilled feelings and desires. Deep down, I always seem to believe there will be something better out there, or more to do… but that’s as far as ambition often carries me. So, yeah it can be challenging but I also believe that it is key in moving forward and seeking out new opportunities. It’s job seems to be each time a welcome catalyst for change, a way to possibly embrace it and continue the daydreams, of bigger futures if only in my head. Continue reading
My thoughts on it based on past experiences
It seems from experience, you may never know how ready for change you are, until the day it happens. This is what can make it challenging, to prepare or plan, even in the most obvious of circumstances there is still something to that change out of our control. So the only way to be ready then is to look back and realize that what made you ready was getting through the change and being brave enough to take on more endeavours in the future.
My thoughts and experiences on it as a perpetual learner
If there is one thing I know for certain, it’s that we really should never stop learning. In fact, recently I’ve learned it can be quite dangerous to become complacenet in life or at least this is what it’s felt like for me.
The moment I discovered how stuck I was from not growing or moving forward in anyway I became dissatisified. Suddenly, the feeling that something had to change occurred and I took action. I needed a challenge that would feel good for me, not overwhelm or overly frustrate me but something I would enjoy being challenged at and could handle. Hence, I took an online course that reminded me of how much I enjoyed learning something new. It was a refreshing feeling to be moving forward again in a way that was comfortable yet challenging, in a subject that I am passionate about learning. When thinking about learning in this context, it seems that amongst this experience I was learning all along and all it took to find that answer was some reflection. Yes, indeed there is much to be learned outside of school and when you think about learning is taking many forms with different lessons, but to me the most important one is in learning about who we are and that’s what I’ve learned in the process of exploring the world, who I am and what I can handle.
There really is no time like the present to take hold of any opportunities that come our way and experience this first hand when we open our minds to the possibilities and make the “now” matter when we find ways to challenge ourselves, take up a new skill, or explore a new subject therefore making the most valuable time of life (so far) now. It’s like the saying goes “there is no time like the present that’s why they call it the present because it’s a gift”. Being determined to make the most of it I always try to either learn from each experience or embrace it, discovering what I can accomplish, where each possibility can take me, how I can learn from every single experience out there and tackle scenarios I wouldn’t have thought possible. The world is your classroom and has the potential to help you discover where your thoughts, dreams and curiousities can take you so why not make the most of what it has to offer!

How I found comfort and clarity on a swingset
I have found myself with a lot to think through recently and some unexpected insights to wrap my head. This has really brought up some interesting questions and experiences, of course one can’t get away scathe free from these insight… On one hand, with each new decision and day I am feeling more certain that there really is a great big world out there ready for me to conquer. On the other hand, there’s still much navigating left to do especially in terms of connections and friendships. As it seems, many elements remain behind unknown doors, and the learning… well it never ends. Which is good, but also quite challenging. There are times where I wished the answers were easy to decipher, having already come up with the questions myself, and finding that both take bravery, and great deal of it.
It has been exactly these kinds of thoughts that left my head spinning and my emotions frazzled along with shot nerves. Exhausted from the tremultous back and forth, on one of my walks I found myself seeking out an old strategy from my past. As a child, I spent hours here, going back and forth trying to calm myself through whatever had jarred me of the day. At the time, this was one of the few ways that helped me coping with a very overwhelming world- at the time-. Since then, I’ve tried a few other strategies, a bit more complex or in need of more practice but none did the trick as simply or easily as the swing set. Magically, my thinking would be clearer and nerves in tack after trying many less successful strategies. Funny, isn’t it that the things we found self-soothing in the past always seem to work well then and now. For me, this has been the swings. There is something about the up and down momentum that helps calm my nerves; and leads to clearer thinking. Perhaps it’s the altitude, periodical
ly feeling like I’m elevated from all that plagues me on ground level or the repetitiveness of going back and forth acts as a form of meditative activity to bring upon a focused mind. Whatever works I guess, and that it gave me some of the clarity I was searching for.

An Message on Perspective and Staying True
It seems over the past little while I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on my writing, the journey it’s taken me on and how I’m planning to continue on with it. Yeah… some deep thinking here. Anyways, I’ve come into the conclusion that as a blogger it can be tricky at times to write what best reflects this particular blogger but also try to make it relatable to others or hope it is on some level. Perhaps others have felt this too from time to time, that as much as it can be about your experiences there are others experiences and perspectives out there to be considered. To me, this means trying to be as authentic as one can be ,in my own experiences while being aware- even though I may not write about it- that others may not experience things the same as I do or have those same experiences to relate to as easy. I suppose the best one can do is write what’s true to you, meaning writing for yourself first and others second. Acknowledging that your perspective may not be the only one out there but can hope there’s some part of it others may find helpful along the way. I also make the conscious choice to keep things as positive as possible. With so much negativity out there in the world I chose to add positivity to our collective consciousness rather than more negative/bad vibes. This is how I chose to create my impact: add good vibes out there. It doesn’t mean I’m not aware of what else is happening, I just don’t want to add to it.
For me, there is no other way to write than what it true, and often positive or ending on a positive note. So I’m going to accept this fact. It might not always come easily but as long as I try to understand it then I think all will be well and helpful in times of conflicting feelings. After all, this experience is as much about me as it is for you. I’m writing my own insights- whether they are relatable or not-, and experiences to help me continue to grow and be inspired. There may be times when it’s message is just a simple reminder for me to get out there or there may be others that we can all learn more from. What’s important is that I stay true to my experience and authentic in my voice.That’s my goal, and believe what I’ll work on carrying through with this project.
